Women@Aurora

By Anna MacDonald, Associate

Women@Aurora was set up in 2018 and I have led the initiative since early 2019.

The group is designed to support the development of women within the company, ensure that Aurora remains a great place for women to work and also acts as a network for sharing resources. We meet at least twice a year with members from across our global offices to discuss ways to overcome professional challenges and align on priorities for change within the company.

It’s amazing to see how much the group has grown each time we get together and how much support there is for the group across the company. Our initiatives on developing a full suite of new training programmes, competitive maternity and paternity policies, greater representation of women in senior roles, and partnering with university societies to encourage more women to enter the energy industry were adopted and rolled out swiftly.

Women at Aurora Energy Research

In addition to internal initiatives, we encourage attendance at networking events for women in energy, including those run by the Women’s Utilities Network (WUN) who arrange fantastic events to develop the skills of women in energy and utilities. Hayley Monks, a WUN founder and Managing Director of Think, Inspire and Create, also came to speak to us about the power of personal branding, the art of negotiation and effective networking.

Embracing Diversity

We have an international outlook and are proud of our global team, with colleagues from more than 20 countries. Life at Aurora is therefore being part of a breadth of cultural and regional backgrounds and personal experience.

It is important to us that our working environment is always interesting and stimulating, and colleagues can share knowledge and skills at an open table.

Social Life

We are a sociable community, holding regular cultural, sporting and fun events and outings. The rapport between our people is key to us being our best, and our offices focus on bringing people together.

Throughout 2020, our Aurora Fun Committee organised art lessons, pub quizzes, The AER Factor talent show, a murder mystery, and much more!

In the office, we look after our people, providing a fresh supply of fruit, snacks, coffee, and beer and pizza for our Friday afternoon meetings, finishing the week on a high.
